Overview
The Slums are Bonetown’s poorly patrolled underbelly, formed from narrow alleys, crumbling structures, and abandoned spaces. Debtors, scavengers, and other residents trying to avoid attention use the district as a refuge.
The area is also a repeatable combat zone where hostile encounters reward experience and loot.
The Alley Intersection
The Alley Intersection is a narrow crossroads where several passages converge. Its dark corners provide cover for anyone trying to stay away from Bonetown’s main streets and patrols.
Silas “The Rat” hides here during The Scrounger’s Tab.
The Scrounger’s Tab
Echo the Innkeeper sends the player into the Slums to recover the 200 credits Silas owes to the Broken Bed.
The debt can be resolved by:
- Paying the full 200 credits.
- Negotiating a partial payment of 100 credits.
- Fighting Silas.
The available choices provide different ways to complete the collection and return to Echo.
Combat encounters
Hostile encounters in the Slums are repeatable, making the district a place to gain combat experience and collect loot. The alleys are lightly patrolled by Bonetown’s official guards, so violence is common away from the main streets.
See the combat system guide for attack zones, defensive responses, stamina, and post-combat progression.
Ring Keeper Gang
The Ring Keeper Gang controls parts of the Slums. Its enforcers demand payment for passage through gang-held streets and attack travelers who refuse.
The gang turns debt into control. Its members use predatory loans, rigged deals, protection charges, and purchased debts to trap vulnerable residents. Enforcers then collect through threats, public punishment, forced service, or violence.
Organization
The gang is led by a figure known as the Ring-Keeper. Beneath the leader are:
- Debt creators, who arrange loans and deals designed to become impossible to repay.
- Recruiters, who target desperate residents and debtors.
- Ring enforcers, who collect tolls, guard gang territory, and carry out punishments.
- Audience handlers, who manage the gang’s illegal betting and public collection spectacles.
Their shifting Slums hideouts are collectively associated with the Rust-Cage, allowing the gang to move its operations when pressure from Bonetown’s authorities becomes too strong.
Relationship with Baron Cross
The Ring Keepers survive beneath Baron Marcus Cross’s authority by paying tribute and avoiding a direct challenge to his rule. They handle minor or disreputable debts that Bonetown’s official operators may ignore, but disputes arise when the gang targets people or property claimed by Cross.
Dangers
- Repeatable hostile encounters.
- Gang-controlled passages and forced tolls.
- Limited Yard-Dog patrols away from the main streets.
- Narrow alleys that provide cover for attackers and debtors alike.
